Zero-waste means to produce as ‘zero’ waste as possible. This life style to reduce the amount of trash disposal in households has become a new trend in this day and age.
Over 8 million tons of plastic waste are floating on the ocean every year, and more than 100,000 sea animals are killed by plastic waste annually.
From 8.3 billion tons of plastic produced between 1950-2015, only 1% of the produced plastic has been recycled.
In 2014, 71% of global citizens were worried about the environmental damage caused by humans.
We interviewed 8 zero-waste life participants in their 20s and 30s. Based on the interviews, we analyzed them to identify the problems and gain meaningful insight.
I wish I could make zero-waste life into a habit.
After Christie got shocked watching a video of a turtle dying due to a plastic straw, she started carrying a tumbler to reduce the amount of waste. But she was not used to taking it with her, so she often left her tumbler at home.
It would be nice to see people participating.
Doeun started to go zero-waste after realizing she was throwing away too much waste. She didn't mind doing it alone at first, but now she feels a little lonely and thinks it would be more fun to do it with others. She would like to suggest zero-waste life to people around her.
Using the information we gathered from the interviewees, we made a review matrix to see what functions current services have. We realized that the services did not have the functions that could solve the problems zero-waste participants were facing.
Through research, we discovered participants have difficulty starting to live or continuing zero-waste lifestyle. Especially, they have emotional difficulties. Games can make people create and sustain interest, meet self-efficacy, and motivate themselves to enjoy zero-waste lifestyle.
